Greetings, Northfield Public Schools Families:
I hope your family continues to be healthy and safe during these abnormal times. The purpose of today’s message is to provide updates about the 2020-2021 school year and our construction work.
Governor’s Announcement Due Thursday for 2020-2021 School Year
The Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) told superintendents last week that Governor Walz will announce the State’s direction for how school districts will begin the 2020-2021 academic year on Thursday, July 30.
The District will need several days after the Governor’s announcement before it can inform families about the specific details of our plans. While three planning teams with more than 60 people have been diligently preparing for the three possible scenarios outlined by MDE, we expect the announcement will influence our planning. I will communicate with you no later than Friday, August 7 many of the details of our reopening based on the direction of the Governor. I anticipate sharing more information throughout the month of August as we continue to refine our strategies to address the unique questions that will continue to arise in preparation for the school year. We will pledge to do our best to make the 2020-2021 school year a positive experience for our families regardless of the scenario and as safe as practicable when students are on campus.
I share this with you so you know what to expect after the Governor’s announcement on Thursday. We know there is much speculation about the State’s decision and the impact it will have on all of us. With all humility, I ask for your continued understanding and patience as we navigate these new experiences prompted by the COVID-19 global pandemic health crisis.
As the school year progresses, we will continue to refine and adjust our work to best meet the needs of our students, staff, and families. We will be evaluating our strategy formally each quarter and will be prepared to make changes as needed to protect the health and safety of our community.
Construction Update
Yes, our construction process continues! Thanks to our partners at Knutson Construction, our construction has continued without delay. The new Greenvale Park Elementary building and Sibley Elementary addition are nearing completion. The renovations at Sibley Elementary and the Northfield Community Education Center (the former Greenvale Park building) continue.
