Thursday night the Northfield Community Band performed its first concert of the summer at Bridge Square, playing Broadway hits under the direction of Rachel Gorden Mercer.

The band presents a free concert series every June consisting of four Thursday evening performances in the downtown park. The concert series continues at 6 p.m. on June 14 alongside The Taste of Northfield event. Mercer will again conduct as the band plays movie music for cinema fans.

St. Olaf College’s Assistant Professor of Music, Dr. Jun Qian, will conduct the final two concerts at 7 p.m. on June 21 and 28. The last concert of the summer will coincide with the opening of the Northfield Girl Scouts’ 100-year anniversary exhibit at the Northfield Historical Society.

The band is open to any high school or adult instrumentalist eager to share their talents. Rehearsals are from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, until June 27 in the high school band room. Contact Mary Williams for more information.

Sponsors include the Northfield Public Schools Community Services Division and Carleton College. The band also receives contributions from By All Means Graphics.
