Community School

The Northfield Public Schools Community School provides free, out-of-school-time programming for students and families at Bridgewater, Greenvale Park and Spring Creek elementary schools.

What is a community school?

Using public schools as hubs, community schools bring together many partners to offer a range of support and opportunities to children, youth and families. A full-service community school is both a school and a community resource, with an integrated focus on academics, health, social services, youth development and community engagement. This leads to a better learning environment for all students, stronger families and a healthier community.

Each community school is responsive to the needs, opportunities and resources of the individual school, but a community school is based on several key components.

Community School Key Components

  • Out-of-school-time programming
  • Expanded health resources/services
  • Youth development programs
  • Adult programming
  • Family resources
  • Early childhood programming
  • Social service connections

Please Note: This is a Minnesota Department of Education program in which student must meet (Minnesota Statutes, section 124D.68, Subdivision 2) criteria as well as the following:
(1) able to follow verbal instructions and directions provided by Community School staff and supervisors,
(2) able to work independently without disturbing others when assigned individual tasks,
(3) able to safely and successfully transition from one activity to another, and from one location to another with minimal adult supervision and;
(4) refrain from hitting, kicking, biting, and other forms of physical aggression toward other students and staff.
