Area Learning Center

Non-Traditional Education Environment for Northfield Students

The Area Learning Center (ALC) provides a safe and inviting non-traditional education environment for qualifying students under the age of 21. Located on the 2nd floor of the Northfield School District Office and Area Learning Center building, the ALC offers a day program, independent study, and dual enrollment options. Students are required to use the main entrance as the building is a secured location.

Goals of the ALC program start with creating a welcoming school environment for students. The environment is safe with clear expectations, a respectful and positive atmosphere, and support to assist students in reaching academic goals. Program staff model the qualities and characteristics that we hope to instill in our students. The ALC strives to continuously improve its educational model through annual Site Improvement Plans.

School Support

The federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) provides Minnesota with a limited amount of funding for school support and improvement work.  MDE worked with students, families, educators, experts, and community members to create the North Star accountability system.  This system helps the state prioritize schools and districts for support.  The North Star system uses several measurements organized into three stages to identify schools for different levels of support.  Using this system, MDE has identified our school as eligible for support.  Please see the links below for more information.

School Closings and e-Learning Days

There are policies and procedures in place in the event that the Northfield Public Schools must be closed due to inclement weather. This information is shared with media outlets and a gold alert will be placed across the entirety of the Northfield Public Schools website.

e-Learning days provide online learning opportunities intended to counter the loss of curriculum momentum resulting from school closing. e-Learning days cannot replace the face-to-face time students have with their teachers but it can provide better continuity when school is interrupted.
