Dear Northfield Public Schools Families:
I am deeply disturbed and saddened by the violence at Annunciation Catholic Church and School in Minneapolis that occurred earlier today. Acts of violence impact all of us, especially when they occur in places that we hold dear and expect to be safe — like schools and houses of worship.
It can be challenging to know how to discuss horrific events like this one with our children. This resource from the National Association of School Psychologists offers guidance for parents about discussing violence with children.
We also know that these events impact us as adults. This NASP resource offers support and recommendations for caregivers about processing tragedies like this one.
Student and staff safety is a priority for our district and community. I’ve previously shared the planning, preparation, and actions we take to promote student safety. I will address this again in an upcoming communication.
I wish I could write something that could help us make sense of this senseless act. I cannot. We need to continue leaning in, relying on each other, and supporting one another as we grieve collectively following this painful event.
Life is precious. Hug your children. Let’s support each other and our community.
Sincerely,
Matt
