Dear Northfield School District Community,
This morning, the Northfield High School Support Team met to develop a plan to support our students and staff following the tragic and unexpected death of Sylvester Huyck, an 11th-grade student at NHS. Sylvester died of apparent heart failure that was related to a pre-existing condition. We recognize the profound impact this loss has on our school community.
In response, Northfield High School, Spring Creek, and Northfield Middle School staff are prepared to support students and staff throughout the week.
At NHS, staff will share a message with students at the beginning of the first period to ensure everyone receives the same information. Support staff will be available in the auditorium throughout the coming days to support and respond to student needs.
Sylvester’s siblings attend Northfield Middle School and Spring Creek. Staff at those schools are prepared to support students as needed. Please contact the school office if your student needs this support.
We encourage everyone to lean on one another during this difficult time. Please hold Sylvester’s family and friends in your hearts, and take a moment today to appreciate those around you. Life is precious—hug your loved ones. The death of someone so young can have a substantial impact on others. Click here to access the National Association of School Psychologists resources to support you when discussing grief and loss.
A visitation and service will be held at Skinner Memorial Chapel at Carleton on Thursday, February 20th:
- Visitation: 10:00 AM
- Service: 11:00 AM
Thank you for your kindness and support as we unite as a community.
Sincerely,
Matt Hillmann
