Dear Northfield School District Families:
The Legislature passed a new law making June 19th (Juneteenth) an official state holiday beginning in 2023.
💡 Why it’s important
- The Juneteenth holiday commemorates the end of slavery in the United States.
- The Legislature passed revisions during the 2023 session making Juneteenth an official state holiday.
- Minnesota Statute 645.44 Subd. 5 says, “… No public business shall be transacted on any holiday, except in cases of necessity …)
🔍 What does it mean?
- All Northfield School District buildings, programs, classes, and services will be closed on June 19, 2023, to observe the Juneteenth holiday.
- Early Ventures, Kid Ventures, and Community School will be closed on June 19, 2023.
- Community Education programs planned for June 19 will not be held. Please watch for details via email from the Community Education Department staff.
- All district employees scheduled to work on June 19 will be paid as if they had worked their scheduled hours.
- Employees who had entered vacation or other leave time for June 19 will have that time removed from the leave system.
