Dear Northfield School District Families:

I am writing today about two items: a reminder about our family engagement “pulse” survey and to share news about a temporary resignation on our school board.

In the 2022-23 Update No. 9, I asked you to give the district feedback about the changes it is implementing in its family engagement plan. Thanks to families who have submitted 262 responses so far. We want to hear from you to help us continuously improve our communication with you about your students. The survey will remain open through Dec. 20 at 5 pm. You can complete one survey for each of your students here.

With a heavy heart, I share the next piece of news. Longtime school board member Noel Stratmoen has submitted a temporary resignation due to health reasons. Under Minnesota Statute 123B.09 Subd.4, a school board member may temporarily resign if they believe a health issue will prevent them from completing their duties for at least 90 days.

Noel has dedicated much of his adult life to public education through service on the Northfield school board. First elected in 1982, he is the longest active serving school board member in Minnesota. Noel cares deeply for our students and community. I know you will all join me in wishing him a speedy recovery so he can return to the school board.

The school board will appoint a new member in January to serve in Noel’s place during his absence. If you have an interest in this temporary position on the school board, I encourage you to review this document from the Minnesota School Boards Association (MSBA) about running for school board. While this situation is different from running for a full term, the guide provides information about the governance role that a school board member holds. Of course, if you have any questions about the board, you can contact chair Claudia Gonzalez-George or me.

If you are interested in being appointed to this temporary board seat, please complete this interest form by 4:00 pm on Jan. 3, 2023. The tentative timeline for appointing someone to hold Noel’s seat can be found here.

As always, don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions or feedback about the district.

Sincerely,

Matt
