Good Evening, Northfield Public Schools Families,
I salute all of our families for your patience, flexibility, and efforts during our first week of distance learning due to the COVID-19 global pandemic health crisis.
Overall, it was a successful first week of distance learning. The District is grateful for our families and their work adjusting to this new routine and schedule. Across the district, thousands of connections were made between teachers and their students, focused on checking in how students are doing and ensuring everyone has the support they need. It is clear there were problems as well — and we don’t hide from those. The Schoology and SeeSaw platforms had performance issues early in the week, though they were mostly resolved at the end of the week. We also acknowledge it can be challenging for some as we transition to new routines and will continue to work to support all of you. We know we will continue to improve each week. We also plan to formally ask for your feedback during the week of April 13, 2020.
Our child nutrition staff served 4,800 meals to students this week. We cared for an average of 48 children of emergency and healthcare workers per day this week. We are finalizing our work to ensure every student has internet access and expect that each of the families still needing access will be connected by the end of next week. I think we can be proud of how we are coming together as a community to do critical work to support one another during this difficult time.
As a reminder, you are invited to join Bridgewater Elementary School principal Nancy Antoine and me tonight at 7 pm for a “read-a-loud” for elementary-aged children via a Zoom webinar. You can find the webinar information below this message. We have the capacity for 500 people, so I encourage you to log on a few minutes early.
Once again, thank you for your support, patience, understanding, and forgiveness as we all transition to this different method of educating our students. I am grateful for every one of you and I am proud of how our community is responding during this global pandemic health crisis.
Most sincerely,
Matt Hillmann, Ed.D.
