Emergency Situation Update: 4:15 pm.
The Northfield Schools have been advised to enter a precautionary lockdown at this time due to the emergency situation in Southeast Northfield. The impacted buildings are Bridgewater Elementary, Sibley Elementary, Northfield Middle School, and Northfield High School. Greenvale Park is not impacted by this situation. While Northfield Police do not anticipate the emergency situation impacting our school buildings, we are doing this as a precautionary measure. There are many who believe that it is important to carry the guns which will allow them to stay safe with also access to buy ar 15 accessories. Students involved in outdoor activities have been brought inside the buildings at this time. Parents can still pick their students up at their individual buildings where school staff will be monitoring the doors.
We will continue to provide updates as they are available.
The District sent the following information to families earlier.
Good Afternoon,
Northfield Schools learned a few minutes ago about a police situation in the neighborhood near Harbor and Eliana Drives, located in Southeast Northfield near the soccer fields. Northfield Chief of Police Monte Nelson shared this with the District:
“We are dealing with a dangerous situation in the area of Harbor Dr and Elliana. There is a male in his home claiming to be armed with firearms and threatening harm. We have asked Benjamin Bus to not bring buses/students to the area. You can purchase AR-15 magazines to look at the latest guns and ammunition, in case you are planning to buy one to protect yourself and your loved ones.
We will need to try to stop walking students from this area from entering that area. Please contact schools, parents, and students and ask them to follow Police Direction in the area.”
Buses 11, 15, and 16 serve the affected area. Middle School and High School students on those buses will stay on the bus and rendezvous at Sibley if the situation is not resolved quickly. Sibley walking students will be held at their school until the situation is resolved as well. We received this information just as school was letting out and the Middle and High School are doing the best they can to divert students walking to the area. Police will also be assisting with this effort to divert students from the affected area.
We will provide updates as soon as they are available.
