From Afghan culture to self-defense, Northfield Public Schools Community Services has a whole slate of new classes as well as old favorites running all summer long.

Community Services and Children’s Culture Connection, a local non-profit, have partnered to create a new camp called Children’s Culture Connection: Afghanistan. Over the course of two weeks, students entering fifth and sixth grade will learn all about the Afghanistan culture and communicate directly with Afghan students. Camp runs from 8:30 a.m. to noon, Monday through Thursday from Aug. 8 to 18.

Youth and adults alike can learn the basics of defending themselves in the brand-new class “Self-defense & Safety Awareness.” Local instructor Ben Beyer will teach students to spot potential danger, escape a grab and proper techniques for defense. Three sessions of the classes will be held from 6-8:30 p.m. beginning with one on June 23.

SummerVentures, KidVentures summer program for kids entering grades 1 through 6, is now open for registration. SummerVentures runs from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday from June 15 to Sept. 1 at Longfellow School. The program offers half-day, full-day and drop-in options. All SummerVentures week-long camps are new.
